Have you ever had the chance to watch one of the famous Takarazuka musicals live? After many years in Japan, I finally found the time to go! One of my English students is an ardent fan of the Takarazuka musical company, so she took me along to watch the show “Casanova”.

My English student met me at Takarazuka Hankyu station. After buying a lunch box, we went to the Takarazuka musical theater. The theater is quite big and many people were waiting in the entrance hall. After getting the tickets, we went inside. While we were waiting for the musical to begin, she told me a lot of interesting facts about the Takarazuka musical company.

The Takarazuka musical company has an all female cast, which is famous all over Japan. Because of this, some organized tours also come to watch it. Girls enter from high school and join the company after two years of hard training. The Takarazuka musical company has a second theater in Tokyo. Their five groups all perform a different show. Actually, most of the fans are female, too.

The show really took my breath away because of the live orchestra, the great voices of the performers and the fantastic music. “Casanova” was written and composed for the Takarazuka musical company so that it fit them perfectly. The show took three hours but the time went by very quickly. I really thank my English student for giving me this chance.

On my way back from the Takarazuka musical, I passed by Martin’s school in Kotoen. It is very close! Click here to read one of his blocks!
