Due to an ongoing pile-up of scandals and problems in the sumo world, sumo coverage has been limited on Japanese TV recently. Fortunately, Japan’s national sport and my personal favorite sport to watch is available via YouTube. What most people in Japan probably don’t know is that NHK broadcasts in other countries as NHK World, the highlight of which is NHK World News. Every day during sumo tournaments, NHK World broadcasts the day’s highlight around the world, despite them not being broadcast in Japan. Furthermore… they are broadcast in English. Two of my favorite Japanese English announcers, Ross Mihara and Hiro Morita plus 1 British announcer, Murray Johnson tell us about the day’s bouts, teaching us non-Japanese speakers lots of great sumo terms, and teaching non-English speakers some great English sports terms. Love sumo? Studying English or Japanese? Just want to learn about Japan’s national sport? Check out sumo highlights on YouTube at the link below- all 15 days of the 2011 May Technical Tournament, plus much more, are available there. Note: NHK World is available almost everywhere in the world, but NOT in Japan!
