Growing up I loved to watch Sesame Street, it was educational in a non-educational, very entertaining way. As my son has now started understanding words I felt it was a good time to share with him some of my favorite episodes and thanks to YouTube it’s easier than ever. Over the past two months I have tracked down numerous episodes of Elmo (who didn’t exist when I was a kid), Grover, Bert and Ernie, Cookie Monster, the Count and my favorite character of them all – Kermit (although he was more of a guest on the show). Watching them with my son I found it amazing how complex some of the sentences they used were and some vocabulary that they slip in here and there was quite amazing. Even my wife noted to me that she hadn’t heard certain expressions or asked me what a character had said as she had never heard the word before. Despite all this, the shows are remarkably enjoyable even for myself and find myself laughing out loud sometimes.
Here are a few that I would like to share with my students at Smith’s 英会話 (conversation school).
I highly recommend trying some of these out for dictation practice. Don’t let appearances fool you…they can be challenging. Good luck.
