Japanese Women Are Tough!

You are here: Home / Blog / Japanese Women Are Tough!

photo (3)Last weekend, I went to Kobe to watch my wife’s rugby match. That’s right, rugby. Many of my students at Smith’s School in Fukushima (スミス英会話福島) are shocked when they learn that my wife plays rugby. Many people think rugby is only for men, but women play it, too. Women’s ruby is becoming more popular each year in Japan and the players work hard to improve. In the 3 years that my wife has been playing rugby, her skill and leadership has gotten much better! The game on Sunday was proof of this.
I’ve watched my wife’s team, the Hyogo Bulls, for 2 years and I think this was the most exciting game they have played. It was Hyogo versus Osaka, a team that has trained especially hard this year and it shows. Osaka fought hard and had many good chances on offense. However, Hyogo’s defense is very strong and stopped Osaka most of the time. My wife and her teammates did very well but made some mistakes, so they were losing 12 – 10 when the game entered extra time. But, on their final attempt, Hyogo gave an extra push and scored on the very last play of the game to win 17-12! I couldn’t believe it!

Hyogo’s next game is against Aichi, the top team in the Kansai League. The other teams in Kansai have never defeated Aichi before. I think Hyogo can finally do it!

In this photo, Hyogo is the team wearing orange and Osaka is wearing purple.
