Mexican Bush SageLast weekend, I went with my family to an event to harvest sweet potatoes organized by the local community. Actually a lot of families were interested, so we were lucky to be able to participate. As the weather was nice, we had a good time. Our son loved to play outside with the plants and we stayed two hours, even after we had finished digging out the sweet potatoes. I am really grateful that the city of Osaka gave us such an opportunity – it is rare enough for children growing up in the cities to get in contact with nature.  We definitely will go again, as they grow all kinds of vegetables and flowers, like these wonderful Mexican bush sages アメジストセージ. Same as the sweet potatoes, they were free to take home for all the participants, and I took some to decorate the Smith school of Englishスミス英会話 in Fuse, Higashi Osaka 東大阪布施 with them.

The plant, as the name suggests, originates from Mexico. As it is found in warmer climate, it grows well in Osaka. The scientific name is Salvia leucantha. “Salvia” meaning “rescue”, European variants of the family were used since ancient times as medicine, and other species are medical plants as well.

Mexican bush sageThe beautiful plant is not only violet (my son`s favorite color) or “amethyst” as the Japanese name ”Amethyst sage” アメジストセージ very well conveys, the form and arrangement of the flowers on a long stem improves the beauty of the Mexican bush sage. Not only that, the bracts are hairy, giving them a very soft, woolly feel.
