One of the great things about Japan is undoubtedly the food.
It was immediately apparent how much of a food centric culture Japan has, and thus the preparation, cooking and serving processes are all very well refined.
Life size model dioramas of the different meals on display outside many restaurants – very cool. I had never seen these before – we don’t have them in Australia, only the pictures on sign board displays.
Osaka is famous for its fantastic cuisine and the reason I’m sure that many foreigners have this city at the very top of their itinerary. Cheap, cheerfully and hearty, no matter where you are in Osaka you will never need to go very far to find great food.
Personally, my favourite food that I have tried since arriving in Japan is okonomiyaki. Having had both the Hiroshima variety (with noodles) and the Osaka/Kansai variety, I’m still unsure about which one I like more. It’s hard to separate them, as both are great. There are however, still many different Japanese dishes that I am yet to try, so maybe in the not too distant future I will have a different favourite!
Sushi, sashimi, shabu-shabu, tempura, ramen, udon, yakisoba, natto, okonomiyaki, teppanyaki and mochi on New Year’s Day – take your pick. They are all delicious.
