Weather

You are here: Home / English School Articles / Weather

Summer has arrived, well and truly.

There doesn’t seem to be much middle ground when it comes to the seasons in Japan. It seems to get cold very quickly and then get hot again very quickly. Shivering through my first experience of minus 5 degree temperatures is definitely not a distant memory!
So far, I haven’t found this summer to be too bad. This is just the beginning though and I have been told by many people that it’s going to get quite a bit hotter and quite a bit more humid! The jury is still out on weather it will surpass last years summer, the hottest in Japan for more than 100 years. We have pretty hot summers back in Australia. The temperatures are generally a little higher, but the humidity slightly lower.

I have taught all of my students at the Senriyama branch about the weather. It was a topic that each of them seemed to enjoy a lot. I told them that it is a very useful topic because discussing the weather is a very common subject, both with people you know and people you don’t know. I also assured them that it is not considered impolite if you can complain about the weather, when it is bad. The Smiths School of English also has some great materials for teaching weather, materials that are relevant and easy to understand. Probably my favourite topic that I have taught so far!

‘What is the weather like today?’

“It’s raining.”

‘What was the weather like yesterday?’

“It was storming.”
