the proper age to study English

You are here: Home / Blog / the proper age to study English

What is the proper age to study English? The answer is, any age. That’s right my friends you heard it hear first, any age. It’s never too late, nor can a person be too old to start studying. Here at Smith’s Hirakata we recently had a new student join. He is a kind gentleman of 67 years, I don’t wont to give out too much of his personal information, so I will skip over some of the finer details. Now, I will say however that he is not a first time learner and he has not studied English in a while, but to me, that’s the amazing thing, he made an effort, made the phone call to the Smith’s office, set up an appointment for a trial lesson, and basically came ready to learn. He joined on the spot. Now that’s just straight up inspiring stuff. He knew what he wanted to do, and did it. How many of us can say that? I must commend him, and once again I have to relate it right back to myself, and what does that mean? Ugh, it means that I must start studying harder. I always make excuses that I don’t have enough time, or I’m just too old (41) and can’t remember things easily. It’s not me that’s old but the excuse itself, so if I can learn any lesson from our new students age, is that it doesn’t matter, because you’re never to old to try.

Jerry

Yes Jerry we are never too old to learn. My newest student, who will have her first lesson today is 70 years old and I also had another one, in her 60s, join last week. As we age we need to continue to exercise our brain and what better way to do it than to study English as a hobby. I see many elderly people out exercising their body but if they don’t exercise their mind then they may end up having a fit body but no memory.

    Jerry,

You are so right! I have had students from 5 to 76 years old. But what you say about motivation is the most important thing. You get out of something only what you put into it. The harder you work, the more benefit you reap. So the time to study is now, now matter what your age.
