What is an “Application”?
“An iPhone app, or application, is what Apple calls third-party software programs developed specifically for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. The applications available can be downloaded directly by the cell phone, or downloaded to a computer and transferred to the phone. Apple has an iPhone app store for those who want to add new features to their phone. The cost varies, but is generally less than $2 US Dollars (USD) per app.”
But honestly the cost varies from about $.99 to $15.00 Dollars. There are literally millions of “Apps” to choose from ranging from games, stock market data, movie info, accounting and so many more.
Now I have tried many free “Apps”, and I have even paid for a few, but my favorite “App” thus far is called “Sketchbook“. I use it almost everyday, almost everywhere and I love it. “Sketchbook” is exactly that, a sketch book. If you are one of those people that find yourself doodling or drawing when you are bored and have extra time than this “App” is for you. This “App” has many cool features, for example, you can choose the style or type of brush you would like to use. You can choose also from pre-chosen colors or you can create your own colors from the color wheel provided. If you make a mistake you can erase and fix the mistake. You can even zoom in or out to make fine or difficult changes, and last but not least I can save the pictures I draw, email them if I like or even make them my screen saver.
How much did all of this cost? $1.99 Dollars U.S.
I will include a couple of pictures that I drew for you to view. Now I should say, I’m in no way an artist, so this was all done for fun.

Adrian,
Those sketches are so cool! That app is great! It opens up many possibilities for people who might not otherwise be artistic. Thanks for sharing that with us.

I have an iPod Touch. Similar to an iPhone, but without the phone. I agree that the apps are brilliant. I have downloaded the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, which is very useful while teaching, because it includes idiomatic phrases and literary examples as well as very full definitions. I have also downladed an excellent Japanese-English dictionary, as well as a very good Japanese learning tool aimed at all levels of the JLTP. All this in addition to wonderful music reproduction, podcasts, wifi internet etc. etc.

Please thank Jerry for this post – he’s the artist among us. I can barely draw a stick figure. I have the utmost respect for artists…
iPhone / iTouch – the apps are killer. It’s like having a computer in your pocket.
