Recently it was the seventh anniversary of the Doghouse Inn, or affectionately known as “The Dog”. It’s a traditional English style pub which is conveniently located in the heart of Tsuruhashi, just a stone’s throw from both Tsuruhashi station and Smith’s School of English, Tsuruhashi.
The owner and host, Osugi san, has created an establishment that is thoroughly welcoming, with friendly staff and patrons, quaint décor and a fine selection of both British and local beer on tap. Traditional English pub food and snacks are also a popular choice on the menu. It also has a high turnout of both expats and locals to watch international sporting events live on TV, such as when the Aussies beat the Kiwis in rugby.
Mike and I occasionally wander accross to ‘the Dog’ on Saturday evenings after our work week has been completed to chew the fat on issues relating to work and everyday life.
On Wednesday evening after work, we met up with some of our students there to join in the birthday celebrations, which included some fine live music. It is always a fantastic and rewarding experience to converse with our students in a natural environment and this constantly reminds us both why we live and teach in Japan.
Thanks to Osugi san, our students and the many other party goers we met for the first time for making it a fun filled and special night.

I think every town in Japan has one… in my case it’s a place called Lion and we go there every Friday night, but the idea is the same. Great food, great atmosphere and good times!
