Hiroko, an elementary school teacher came to me about two months ago desiring the Smith’s Travel Course. She had never been abroad, was invited to a wedding in Florida, and planned on turning it into a ten-day vacation for her and her husband. Additionally, she had never studied English conversation before and was initially quite nervous in my class. It was no surprise to me that by the third lesson she was responding quickly and confidently to the material and, after the sixth lesson seemed like she was prepared to handle most of the situations that might occur during her travels.
Yesterday I received a thank you note from her. She took my advice and kept a journal of her daily activities while in Florida. It seems that she did it all – DisneyWorld of course, Epcot Center, played a round of golf, and even witnessed a space shuttle launch. She thanked me for teaching her “clearly and at her pace,” and said that her trip went well. It was a nice, unexpected surprise to hear from her because she is not a regular student, and upon leaving, didn’t even hint that she might have intentions to join as one. What a nice lady! She is the type of student that would be “take-off” quickly, take all kinds of chances with the language, and develop the confidence to communicate with no problems. I surely hope she comes back because she was a fun student with a great sense of humor and a real pleasure to teach! Thank you Hiroko for thinking about me!
