One of the most romantic drives for the sunset has got to be the Echizen Coast in Fukui Prefecture, a good 150-km-long stretch straight north from Tsuruga all the way up to Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture. You may remember from previous posts on summer festivals that Tsuruga has the coolest fireworks in Kansai, even though it isn’t technically Kansai.
Well the Echizen Coast has a mostly west aspect and therefore gets some of the prettiest seaside sunsets you could ever hope for. And whats more, there are even a handful of clean beaches with some reasonable good snorkeling in the area. English Conversation students at the Smith’s School of English in Kotoen スミス英会話 甲東園were surprised to learn that two of my students come from Kanazawa and have made the trip often.
From Tsuruga on Route 27, look for the colossal concrete junction to Route 8 east of the city. Head up Route 8, watch the signs carefully and drive straight up until you find Route 305. It’s one of the best coastal drives anywhere as it hugs the mountainside and wraps around beautiful Tsuruga Bay. You can even glimpse a couple of nuclear power plants across the water from there reminding you that civilization is nearby at all times.
Enjoy the crab!
