I had to include this picture on my Soapbox!
This is such an amazing picture of the sunrise over Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture!
After seeing this picture I really envy Ed and Chiharu over there at Smiths School of English in Ohtsu, Shiga Prefecture!
Tonight our class began with… the students asking each other what they had each done over the Obon holiday.
Most students traveled back to their hometowns, as is the custom here in Japan during Obon, some went overseas, while others took the time to just enjoy some free time with their friends, as in the case of the student which took this picture.
In this case, my student explained that one of his friends has a vacation home on the shores of Lake Biwa and every year they have a tradition of gathering together a group of old friends and enjoying a couple of days of barbequing and water activities on the lake.
He shared his pictures with the class this evening and the picture which impressed everyone the most was this one of the sunrise over Lake Biwa.
He is a good photographer!
By the way, I highly recommend taking a trip around Lake Biwa if you have time. I spent a day doing this last year with a student and we had a great time.
There are many beautiful viewing spots around the lake and also some interesting towns along the road to stop and visit. I posted a story here last year with the details.
Check it out if you have time!

Alex-
Thank you for your envy? Living in Shiga and getting to look at Lake Biwa everyday is truly a blessing. Usually I enjoy riding my bike along the lake, but lately I’ve also enjoyed swimming, boating, wakeboarding and wakeskating. The lake is a magnificent natural attribute, and it provides a lot of us with drinking water. Furthermore, Lake Biwa is host to some of the most impressive fireworks in Japan. So thank you fo helping spread the word about a place I believe to be one of the nicest natural spots in Japan.
