One of the best things about being an English coach is seeing a student’s improvements. Whether it’s in business English or just conversation, I’m always happy to see a student grow closer to their goals of speaking fluently and confidently. The digital curriculum we have is a great help in reaching those goals.
At the beginning of each lesson I always do a little warm up with my students by asking them about their weekends. They have become so accustomed to it that some of them prepare something in writing to discuss.
Benefits of Writing
Writing in English is a great way to improve because you practice the language three times. Once, when you think of what to write, then when you write and finally when you read what you have written. This student joined my school at Smith’s Kyobashi in March of this year and as you can see he has made great strides in his ability. Before, he would write what he wanted to say in Japanese first then translate it into English. Now he is not writing as much in Japanese but mainly in English.
He has also progressed from writing about his weekend to writing about his future plans and goals. Of course there are some mistakes but he is not making as many as he did when he first started. His conversational skills have also improved as well. I am very proud of how far he has come and look forward to seeing his ability and confidence grow even more.
That’s great Sylvester. I too, always encourage them to at least try and keep a journal, no matter how small, and am delighted when they ask me to check it. Keep it up!
I have a couple of students who like to write and discuss their writings as the lesson. It’s really a great way to improve.
