When I hear that a new student has decided to join the ranks of Sakai Higashi Smith’s school, it is always great news. However, I am extra pleased if they decide to take the “normal” course of study. I have found that my students who have committed to this course are the students who improve their English at a faster rate. I have been asked more than once, “how long will it take me to be able to speak English?” This question always brings a smile to my face, as there is no possible truthful answer I can provide. I can certainly give 110% effort in teaching a new student using the proven Smith’s curriculum, however, the student themselves need to commit to their studies.
By choosing the Normal Course, a student is not only getting the cheapest course offered, but also eliminates any room for procrastination. Making English part of their weekly routine, the students are setting themselves on the right track towards improving their English. I have suggested to some students on the powerful course who were finding it hard to find the time to book lessons, to change to the Normal Course. The results of this, is that they then start planning their weekly activities around their English lesson, as opposed to trying to squeeze their lesson in between other plans.
I consider my Normal Course students to be the core of my student body. Of course, all of my students are equally important to me. However, I believe that as a franchise owner, it is important for me to know what factors make up the core of my business.

The first step to becoming a serious learner of ANY subject is to start a set schedule for regularly practicing. The normal course at Smith’s (every week, same day and same time) is a great way to begin the journey of learning English. Thanks for highlighting this for everyone!

Tim,
You hit the “nail” on the head my friend. By choosing the “Normal” course, the student is committing to have a regular English Lesson every week. This is really important and actually is the easiest way to be sure to continue to study and make progess. Of course the “Fixed Powerful” students are also doing the right thing. Some maybe cannot fix their lesson but if they do, they will make the quickest progress. Keep up the good work!

Tim,
Thanks for this posting! I was just giving this advice to a new student who joined after a trial lesson this past Wednesday evening. For those students who are able to take the Normal Course they are receiving the best of both worlds. Economical price and guaranteed lesson time each and every week. For us teachers also, it tends to simplify our lesson planning.
Great article!
