Smith’s School of English Lesson at Kyobashi May 22 by MW
ET– From the Smith’s School of English One Point Series
I have these 2 students (1 green level/1 red level) quite frequently. They enjoy being classmates, it helps their confidence and almost always arrange the same class together. I know that they go to a stand up bar often. So I easily reviewed last weeks B34 one point “For me _____ is enjoyable because _____” using a stand up bar as the subject.
Routine 9- Finnegan’s Bar – From Smith’s School of English Routine Series
I noticed that the 2 students hadn’t tried the Finnegan’s bar routine yet. So I chose this because of its fun topic that both of the students could easily relate to. They understood the story and comprehended it well during the listen and repeat session. They struggled a bit with the question and answer session but only on simple grammar and articles common with this routine. I was pleased to see them answering the questions shortly after without errors. Then this gave us plenty of time for bridging. By the end of the lesson they were confidently answering the questions. They were even using some of the expressions as direct quotes in the answers. I was very happy to see them write one complete page of notes in their notebook. This is a good indication that they learned a lot from this lesson and that they will try to use this material in future lessons.
Item – Past 4 From Smith’s School of English Item Series
We spent some extra time on the Routine so I had to simplify my review of this Item. I knew this would be a simple exercise but it’s very important to review the basics periodically to keep the sharp. Using the picture cards from this lesson I asked the students to ask questions and answer using the target grammar. Sure enough there were a few tiny spots to fix up so it was a good review.
One Point– From the Smith’s School of English One Point Series
At the end of the lesson I introduced today’s one point- A3.29 “once you get the knack of _____ it’s easy”. The students easily grasped the concept of this phrase and were able to repeat it with their own answers. I then asked them if they were going to the stand up bar again tonight. At this point they were in very happy spirits so I was happy to hear their cheerful “yes” answer. This lesson went well and I am happy to say that the learning process was the clear winner tonight.
