“Seek First to Understand and Then to Be Understood.”

You are here: Home / Blog / “Seek First to Understand and Then to Be Understood.”

The first time I read these words within the pages of a Stephen Covey’s, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, I knew they were important.

At that time, back in 1989, it was my task to seek knowledge.

Today it is my PASSION to have you understand what I know. I want to show you how to succeed as I have in business.

Specifically, these articles are about showing you how to open and operate your own profitable English School. More importantly these pages are about having a great life while teaching English in Japan.

The articles are simple to read and the task itself is not difficult. Anyone who can speak English can do it. It’s about having a great life and yes, it’s about making money.  You’ll never get rich financially teaching English however a rich life with a reasonable income, is very possible.

Oops, the money word. Let’s clear that up. Do you think it’s wrong to talk about money and teaching in the same breath? Now, know this: Any properly run and profitable English School is first a business. Without the profit we can not provide the professionally motivated teaching establishments our students want and need.

Why should you listen to me?

Well it’s simple: no other foreigner in Japan has ever opened as many teacher-owned schools as I have. Smith’s School of English franchise schools became the largest non-Japanese-owned English School system in Japan just three years after we started in 1996. I am the proud recipient of the heartfelt thanks and testimonials of many school owners. To read but a few go to https://www.sse-franchise.com. The proof is there!

Sure listen to those with advice and theories, but if you really want to know, then ask someone who has done it repeatedly. It took me years of reading, studying under various bosses, listening to the business masters, and making mistakes, to get it right. I have crammed all the essentials into this series. You don’t have to go through what I did. If you want to get it right at once, start by reading these simple articles to the very end.

If you really want your own a school, then I know you can do it. Join the many before you who have listened to my advice and prospered. Read the articles, Learn from these pages, and Do what they say.

Read, Learn, Do. And your school providing your freedom and your income will be yours!

Remember, Keep It Simple. K.I.S your school.
