I must admit this is not my original idea…But the grammar combined with the function works well for high level English school students: I spent the first ten minutes brainstorming types of disasters, natural and those that humans are responsible for, resulting in lots of new vocabulary for the student…Then combined the grammar (past continuous) with storytelling, eg., “Where were you and what were you doing when you heard the news about the terrorist attack on September 11th?” I had the student ask me that question first, modeled a lengthy response, and she knew what to do throughout the rest of the lesson. She loved it! Give it a try!
