Tsukaguchi English Lesson on Nutritional Value

You are here: Home / Blog / Tsukaguchi English Lesson on Nutritional Value

Nutritional Value

Hi, it’s Derek from Smith’s School of English Tsukaguchi. OK so why did nutritional value come up as a topic in English lessons at my Tsukaguchi English school in Amagasaki? Well, it began with me starting weight training again last October. This made me start thinking more about the nutritional value of the food I ate. I wanted to put on some muscle, so I needed to make sure I had enough protein in my diet. The other reason nutritional value came up as a topic in English lessons was simply that I thought it would be fun for my English students to learn about it in English. Besides learning some new English, they could learn new things about nutrition. So I went ahead and guess what, it was a lot of fun!

My English Lesson Plan

1) First, I taught my Tsukaguchi English students some vocabulary and sentence patterns we use in English when talking about nutritional value. I taught the vocabulary protein, carbohydrates (carbs), fiber, vitamins and minerals. As an example, I used a protein bar I had bought at Costco in Amagasaki which showed some nutritional value information on the front of the wrapping. One bar contained 21 grams of protein, so it was high in protein!

2) Next, I asked my English students what they usually had for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks and I wrote them all on the whiteboard. This way they could see everything they consumed in a day. I was glad to see that they had well-balanced, healthy diets. Good for them!

3) Then I asked my English students to describe the nutritional value of everything they had using the vocabulary and sentence structures I had taught them before. For example, “Fish is high in protein. Protein is good for muscles.” They did a great job!

4) Finally, I asked my English students if they thought they had a healthy diet. All of my English students in Tsukaguchi who did this English lesson thought they had a healthy diet. I agreed!

Tsukaguchi English Lesson Material Based on Our Lives Is Fun

As you can see in the the above English lesson plan on nutritional value, English lesson topics at Smith’s School of English Tsukaguchi can be based on both my life and the lives of my English students. I think that this approach of basing English lessons on our lives makes English lessons fun for all here at Smith’s School of English Tsukaguchi. Why not join us?
