Japan is moving more and more towards becoming a bilingual country. Jr. high schools and high schools are changing their curriculum to “up” the English skills of their students. Beginning this year, elementary schools across Japan have been mandated to teach English starting at grade 5. Until this year, the government mandated English to be taught from jr. high school. Many schools contract out to teachers from English conversation schools so that students can start learning from even younger grades. I have taught in some elementary schools to children as young as first grade, depending on the board of education. Also many kindergartens and day care centres are contracting out to give their students a one up in this competitive society.
Also, every day more students come to me and tell me that their companies are “going English”. This means that the main language used in their place of work will be English. This is a current trend among businesses in Japan. This will mean that many people currently working at these businesses will need to improve their English, and people looking to work at many companies in the future will need to have strong English skills.
Having strong English skills will be more and more important for people of all ages in Japanese society as it moves toward bilingualism.
Now is the time to own an English school in Japan!
