The beginning of the year is an opportunity for all students to talk about New Year Resolutions. We take a positive look into the future and discuss our personal goals and dreams. Many resolutions are closely connected to English studies. Talking about future plans with students allows me to better understand their individual needs.
The majority of resolutions among SSE Katsura students can be divided into two broad groups.
Academic And Business
Several students became interested in getting a higher score at TOEIC or TOEFL tests. Some students need it to be able to get a promotion at work and others need a certificate to enter a desired school in Japan or abroad. We have already started practicing for the tests.
As a first step I make sure every student becomes comfortable with the test order and length of each part. We then practice every part of the test in a stress-free environment. The key to success is to know what to expect.
Hobby and Free-time
Naturally, many students are interested in using English on their travels. Their resolutions are often about visiting a country of their dreams. One student has expressed a wish to host foreign students. Another student would like to become a volunteer teacher for foreign workers in the area. I was delighted to hear that English is important for my students not only abroad but also in the Katsura area. Listening to my students’ future plans makes it easier to prepare relevant lesson plans based on their particular wishes.
My Resolutions
As for me, I have two simple resolutions for 2023. To finally hold our annual hanami picnic with students again. We all are looking forward to this event. Regarding my hobbies, I’m planning to draw three new ink illustrations this year.
And how about you? Do you have any New Year Resolutions? Come and tell us. Let’s talk about your plans, dreams and wishes.
Tom, SSE Katsura.
