Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it? What is it?
Well, as it turns out, it’s a very healthy diet consisting of grains, vegetables and beans and avoiding highly processed or refined foods. It also seems to be very popular with many Hollywood celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, and Joe Pesci.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrobiotic_diet and we can enjoy it right here in Osaka!
I was recently invited to enjoy such a lunch by a student and at first I was a little skeptical, but I must tell you that the lunch was absolutely incredible.
You may imagine something very small but actually the portions were very nice and I felt full after our lunch!
In addition I was energetic all day and didn’t experience the drowsiness I get after my usually lunches.
I also learned that the spread of the macrobiotic diet and philosophy are due to the work of a Japanese man named George Ohsawa, born Nyoichi Sakurazawa (桜沢 如一) to direct descendants of the samurai. If you are interested, check out this link:

So, if you are ever in the Umeda area and would like to check out a healthy lunch option, I highly recommend Rocca Café between Yotsubashi Suji and Naniwa Suji just south of the river. The lunch sets are great, the atmosphere is very comfortable and the staff are very friendly!

One of the things which I really enjoy about this job is how interesting and unique each one of my students is and because of this it is possible for me to learn and experience new things around me in Japan!
I am truly lucky to be surrounded by these friends every day of the week!
Thank you!

Alex,
The point about learning about Japan from your students is an excellent point. More than English teachers, we are cultural ambassadors and our students are too. They show us many things that really enrich our experience in Japan. This is one of the reasons, living here and teaching is so rewarding but I think owning your own school adds to this by enabling us to have the resources and time to really enjoy life here. Keep up the good work and have fun!
