Kyoto Gosho is coming up soon and in the past I’ve made several pleas for readers to make the extra effort to visit. But rather than just talk about it in the past, I’m offering this as the first installment in an introduction series to give you a chance to fit it into your schedule.
This spring Kyoto-Gosho is open from Thursday April 4th to Monday April 8th. My English conversation students at the popular Smith’s School of English in Kotoen スミス英会話 甲東園have another recommendation. The official closing time is 5pm. Since the vast majority of people are leaving by 3:30 to 4:00, it is possible to get in and easily walk through in about 90mins.
At Kyoto Gosho, visitors are not only greeted with perfectly-preserved historical buildings but also some of the prettiest pond garden views in all of Kyoto. It’s no wonder the site is a key national heritage and is only open to the public about 10 days a year.
Getting there is not too difficult, either. Coming in from the West on Hankyu or from the South on Kintetsu, go all the way up to Kyoto Subway Karasuma Stn for lunch and coffee and then it’s about a 30min walk north from there. Heading straight to it, go all the way up to Marutamachi.
