Valentine’s day in Japan is so unlike valentine’s day in Canada. For men. In Canada, valentine’s day is a day for men to spend money, stress about preparing just the right gift, dinner, romantic night out. In years past I have spent upwards of 3 to 4 hundred dollars on my lovely lady on valentine’s day. But not so in Japan! In Japan, valentine’s day is a day for men to kick back and relax, and wait for the presents to come to them!

This year on valentine’s day I received so many gifts from the wonderful students at my English school! Chocolate and chocolate and more chocolate…. and a few extra unique gifts as well. One student prepared sandwiches for me- one camambert and smoked salmon, the other ham and Swiss cheese, accompanied by my favourite Dry Ginger Ale! I definitely enjoyed that meal! Another student gave me homemade/ hand-made cake and cookies, wrapped in a hand-made gift box. The box was so well done I thought for sure she bought it, but in fact she made it herself! Check out the picture above and you’ll see what i mean!

So I enjoyed my valentine’s day in Japan, and I was sitting on the sofa, belly full of scrumptious sandwiches, ginger ale and hand-made cake and cookies when I remembered the other half of Japanese valentine’s day: White Day. White day takes place exactly 1 month later than valentine’s day, on March 14th. On white day, men are expected to give return gifts to those women who gave them gifts on valentine’s day. So as happy as i am now, with my belly full of fantastic food, I realize that I have less than a month to prepare gifts for all my wonderful English students!

Full and feeling good,

Edward, Smith’s School of English Otsu

    Hey Edward,

Yes, you have to love Valentine’s Day in Japan as a male Smiths School of English teacher!! However, it’s terrible for my New Years Resolution to lose weight!
