Well 2008 the year of the Mouse is now in the past as today is New Year’s Day 2009 (in Japan) and we commence the year of the Ox, Bullock, Bull or Cow (Ushi in Japanese) whichever you prefer to call it.
The year of the Ox, which by the way under the Chinese calendar doesn’t commence until the Chinese New Year does which happens in the last week of January or first two weeks of February depending on the moon’s cycle, comes around every twelve years as there are twelve moon signs and in addition, there are five different types of Ox years which are based on the elements – Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth which rotate with each moon sign, which means that it will be another 60 years before the next Earth Ox year – so we should make the most it. I for one will certainly not be alive for the next Earth Ox year so I want to make the most of it.
2009 is an Earth Ox year and according to the Chinese horoscope it means that it is a year where you need to be faithful to your duties, which is great for we Smith’s School of English coaches of communicative confidence as we are always faithul to our duty of improving the English conversation skills of our student base, be they children or adults.
The Chinese believe that the Earth Ox fights for the constant advancement of his station in life and will endure difficulties and suffering without complaint and that by being purposeful and determined he will go far. He is hard to push back because he never surrenders captured ground. The Earth Ox is regarded as the slowest but the surest of all Oxen.
It is timely then that in these harsh economic conditions to remember that successful people are people who set achievable goals, and develop plans with action steps and target completion dates to measure their success. The year 2009 is after all an Earth Ox year and we must therefore continue to be purposeful and determined and never surrender or lose track of our goals.

Be an ox – no success can be achieved without conscientious effort.
