As I have said many times a thousand articles describing the virtues of Kyoto would not do the city justice yet this article is another attempt.
The striking photo on the left is a curious view of the National Treasure surrounded by modern Karasuma office buildings and high-rise condominiums. It was taken from inside a new office building entrance hall. The photo on the right is taken from the outside, facing that same modern office building, with the National Treasure towering right behind me. There is a clue somewhere in the photo as to where the curious photo on the left was taken.
So there are two places to guess: What is the National Treasure in the photo, and from where was the photo taken? ( 六角堂 )
Looking forward to your comments and guesses!

Hi Martin,
I love reading your articles. I love to hear what you say about astrology, and I love hearing about great places to visit. I hope someday I can travel around like you do and see all the great places you see. When I do, I’ll read your articles again for ideas! You are Smith’s very own Lonely Planet!!
I have no idea where in Kyoto this is, but Yuich thinks it Rokkakudo.

Carol –
Rokkakudo it is, great! And the photo was taken from inside the fabulous new Rokkakudoten Starbucks. You have to see it to believe it.
But not astrology … astronomy! 🙂

Hi Martin,
Thanks for your fun post. Having read the answers and looking at the photo on the right, I see what I think is the Starbucks logo. Am I right?
I love this mix of the old and new in Japan.
