Getting comfortable with English

You are here: Home / Blog / Getting comfortable with English

Since I hadn’t seen my first two students today in over a month, they were visibly nervous about getting into the lesson. We got into talking about movies and that’s when they started to warm up, really getting into the topic.
One student told me that her favorite actor was George Clooney. When I asked why, she said, “Because he’s funny.” To make it more specific, I suggested to her that she liked his funny personality. She agreed and told me that he was really entertaining in all of the interviews that she had watched.
The other student retreated a bit when it came to her turn. She answered in a small voice that her favorite actor was Orlando Bloom. I waited for her to elaborate on why she had chosen Orlando Bloom, not quite sure if she would answer or not because she’d begun to blush. Then she quietly laughed and said, “Because he looks good.” We all had a good laugh over her honesty and soon got into a debate over whether Orlando looked better as his character in the movie ‘Lord of the Rings’ (With the long blonde hair), or as his normal self. Overwhelmingly, all three of us felt that the actor played a pretty decent elf. (In other words, the braided elf hair was definitely ‘in’.)
After going off-topic with elves for a bit, we got back to the subject of movies with everyone feeling a lot more open and relaxed.
