My students have begun to really enjoy writing as a way of improving their English conversational skill. Many of them bring a one or two page journal of what they did the previous week. Others write about current events or other topics that they are interested in. Writing in a new language is more difficult than learning to speak it. Of course there are will be some mistakes, but those are also opportunities to learn.
This student’s writing has improved and there has also been an improvement in her conversation ability. I am always glad to see her writing. She has a very busy schedule, but takes the time to create the journal for her class.
As an English coach, I am happy that I motivate students to continue learning outside of the classroom. Before they began writing, our lessons were teacher driven where I provided the material. Now the students who write lead the lessons themselves. This means that they talk more during the lessons than those students who do not write. I provide small corrections and explanations when asked of course. My goal has always been to provide a creative way of improving my students’ English ability. Allowing them to write and lead the lessons themselves has proven to be a very successful way of doing it.
