Jim Scarle (Owner/Teacher, Smith’s School of English – Hashimoto)
April 2007 marks the second anniversary of Smith’s English School here in Hashimoto, Sagamihara City, Japan. Many of the students have begun their second year and, thankfully appear to be quite satisfied with my English teaching!
Satisfaction is also something that I am lucky enough to get every day that I teach English at Smith’s. Upon enrolling with Smith’s school of English, the majority of the students are shy and not confident in their ability to speak English. It is always a great moment for me when I see these students breaking through the “confidence barrier!” Once this happens, improvement really begins to show!
There are several students at Smith’s school of English Hashimoto franchise that started as complete beginners and are now able to carry on conversations in English! Helping and watching these particular students go from” nothing” to “something” is truly the most rewarding part of my English teaching experience. To them I say “congratulations and thank you!”
Every student in the Hashimoto School is unique, all having different reasons and needs for learning the language. The Smith’s system has five levels of competency for students however the fact is if we have 50 students we have 50 unique levels. This point is promoted heavily in initial English coach training at Smith’s and all I can say is that is the pleasure of the job. Everyone is individual, and I make it a rule to recognize and address their individual needs every time they sit down in my classroom…and we have a lot of fun along the way! Helping every student achieve their goals with the English language is my number one priority. I look forward to coaching and helping these people for many years to come!
Jim Scarle.
