As you probably know by now, my wife Yoko and I are great fans of driving around Japan and my wheels have traveled across 30 prefectures. We love going to our favorite places over and over again but just as rewarding is searching out new ones, fabulous places that are sometimes missed on people’s itineraries. There are countless stunning places in Japan that simply do not get the major crowds you would expect around historic sites such as Kyoto, Kamakura or Kanazawa.
Here’s another great road trip Yoko have done … three times now so it’s definitely worth writing about. It’s the Echizen Kaigan in Fukui Prefecture. It runs about 125kms straight north along the coast from Tsuruga all the way up to Tojimbou.
Along the way there are a great many traditional fishing villages, markets and seafood restaurants specializing in savory Sea of Japan crab. As well there are numerous sandy beaches and even fairly decent scuba diving opportunities when the sea isn’t too rough! All in all, a very nice drive.
Enjoy!

Martin,
I love reading about your driving adventures. Although we don’t have a car, we enjoy riding our bikes and seeing things that rail only people never get to see. I look forward to getting a car and following your advice and adventures for myself.
Thanks for the great ideas and visuals,
Edward, SSE Ohtsu
