For your next holiday, why not head down to Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu. Kagoshima is a surprisingly lush, sub-tropical, volcanic region in the southernmost corner of Japan and is home to some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet anywhere. Dense jungle-like forest and smoking volcanoes are typical in Kagoshima and the lowland regions also rank among the warmest in the country.
North of the city on the opposite side of the Bay lies Mt. Kirishima National Park. Roads take day-trippers up to around 1750m, well above the tree line and where sulphurous water boils out of the ground at regular intervals. The natural beauty of the park is a worthy reason in its own right to visit, but temple buffs shouldn’t miss the famous Kirishima Jingu, legendary home of the ever more legendary Ninigino-mikoto and featured in a number of popular Japanese television dramas on NHK.
Ebino-Kogen is a relaxing 15km-long walk around the volcanic area of the park and encirlcles the emerald green crater Lake Rokkannon. From there a steep climb to the summit is possible and on a clear day views all the way down to Kagoshima City and Sakurajima are possible. It’s beautiful at night too and very, very dark so bring a telescope! Enjoy!
