Driving in Japan 9: A Day Trip to Rurikei ( るり渓)

You are here: Home / Blog / Driving in Japan 9: A Day Trip to Rurikei ( るり渓)

One of nicest day trips by car that I can think of is a day spent at Rurikei.  This is a mountain-top recreational area a few kilometers north of Nose-cho along Route 173, and just inside Kyoto Prefecture, Nantan City. Rurikei has a large number of sights with tons of things to do, and if you’re looking for a clean, charming place to spend the day with a date, a night with a telescope, an early morning with a set of golf clubs, a few hikes, an onsen resort or simply chilling out and catching some much-needed fresh air, then this is the place to come.

The amazing thing about Rurikei is that it really makes you feel like you’re hundreds of kilometers from the city.  In fact, it is just 45 kilometers from Nishinomiya, a mere 44 kilometers from Umeda and only 32 kilometers straight north of Kawanishi.   On most days the traffic north of Kawanishi isn’t too heavy and you can be up there and parked within an hour or so.  Parking is free in most places, renting a boat below and paddling aroung the tranquil resevoir with your favorite other costs a paltry 1,500 yen per hour, and did I mention parking was free?   So are the public toilets!

Enjoy yourselves and drive carefully!  The road up to the summit is steep!
