Decorating My School in Fuse with Roses

roses バラ(薔薇)As during the last two weeks, our students 英会話生徒 here in Fuse, Higashi Osaka 東大阪布施, are greeted by the sight of some beautiful flowers when entering the school.  After Chrysanthemums two weeks ago and Carnations last week, I decided for some roses バラ(薔薇) at a flower shop in Ajiro 足代 this week.  To get the classroom 教室 even more colorful, I choose two white roses and a couple of pink ones.

A lot of the student at our school in Fuse, Ajiro 布施足代 make some positive comment when they enter. For me as an English conversation teacher, this is a welcome opportunity to encourage them to continue in a natural English Conversation 英会話. For example this week, I could use the roses バラ(薔薇) in the classroom 教室 to teach the students 英会話生徒 some natural uses of the Passive Voice. As Passive voice is object oriented rather than subject oriented, when speaking about the ”object” rose it can be used quite natural.  For Example, we used phrases like “People are delighted by roses.” or “If a red rose is given to a beautiful lady, her heart will flourish, too.” Our students of English Conversation really appreciate such a natural approach.

rosesバラ(薔薇)To speak about the symbolism of the rose, I guess that everybody knows that a red rose is THE symbol of fiery love. Apart from that, it was used throughout the ages to symbolize different imports. For example in the Roman times a rose was left in front of the door when a private meeting was held (For all English students – have you recognized the Passive Voice?), and Socialism is using the flower as its symbol in our times. Also, it is the state flower of both, England and the United States of America.

As for me, at our wedding day, I always give her the number years that we are married in deep red roses.  Maybe you think that this is old fashioned, but wives really appreciate to get  flower from their husband, even if they are already married for a long time. Naturally, my wife always always says that it is a waste of money, but her eyes tell different.

For the time being, I will continue decorating our classroom 教室 with a different flower every day, as it adds a lot of atmosphere to the classroom.  Sometimes, like this week, we can also enjoy the decent fragrance of the flower, which makes it enjoyable twice as much.

If you want to learn more about the rose, try the very detailed articles on wikipedia in English and 日本語:
