Calling Students by Their First Names

You are here: Home / Blog / Calling Students by Their First Names

I enjoy sharing my Canadian culture with students at my English conversation school (英会話学校), Smith’s School of English Tsukaguchi (スミス英会話 塚口校) in Tsukaguchi (塚口町), Amagasaki City (尼崎市), Hyogo Prefecture (兵庫県), Japan. Calling people by their first names is common in Canada , even with people who are not very close.  Therefore I try to call my students by their first names. It feels friendlier and warmer to me, and I want my students to experience my culture. I have told some students that my school is Canada, not Japan, therefore calling students by their first names is OK. I think that experiencing such cultural differences is very good for my students.  This gives them much more than merely English conversation (英会話).  At Smith’s School of English Tsukaguchi, students can both study English conversation and experience a foreign culture in Tsukaguchi without really having to leave their home, Japan. I am happy to be able to offer them this great opportunity. (^.^)
