I like Asagaya because it is a self contained city so close to central Tokyo that keeps it original family owned shops feel, yet a short 5 min train ride to Shinjuku.
The shotengai is long and always always busy, with a choice of restaurants food shops and shopping of all kinds. One of my students owns a knife shop and is Japan’s largest dealers in collectible knives. There is a Spanish tapas bar who’s Master sings Spanish traditional songs, also a Bar owned by an English guy that attracts English speakers of all, countries including Japanese.
Walking south you come to a cherry blossom lined river that is named after the Zenpukuji temple from where it originates. It’s a place to exercise for baseball games and is very crowded for ohanami.
Asagaya is an exciting and comfortable place to live it’s 2 big festivals in the year Asagaya Jazz fest and Otanabata attract a lot of people. Yes I can happily say I love living here!!!
