I mentioned in an earlier posting that I enjoy writing these blog entries not only to share stories of my personal experiences while here in Japan but also because many of my

This site has given us who are teaching English in Japan at Smiths School of English the opportunity to share our stories and voice our opinions on various topics.  Up until recently this area had been a platform for us English teachers at Smiths School of English only but… a few months ago one of my former students who is also a very good friend of mine, and very interesting writer, decided to write regular updates for my Japanese soapbox area.

Many of my students follow her updates and they are inspired and amused by stories of her life now living and working in New Zealand (ニュージーランド) as a cytotechnologist. (細胞検査技師){さいぼう けんさ ぎし}

This was her lifelong dream and she achieved it recently.  I highly recommend sharing this soapbox category over on our Japanese site with your students.  It’s in Japanese so all of your students will be able to read it and I guarantee you if you ask them what they thought of the postings they will share their surprise at what they read.

This former student of mine is truly unique in that she never gave up on her dream.  I believe your students will be both inspired and entertained by her stories.  I have encouraged my students to also send me comments or questions for her and I upload them on her blog.  She checks it regularly and sends back her answers.  After your students view the blog, why not ask them to make some comments.  I think she would appreciate the encouragement and support from Smiths School of English.  You teachers are also more than welcome to send comments in either Japanese or English!

If you forward them along to me by email, along with your Smiths School of English franchise name, I will upload them for her to read.

    Alex,

    Thanks. I am sure that your student’s blog posts will be great reading for all of our students. I think that the SSE soapbox can be good for our students to practice reading and then discussing in future lessons but now I can see that it can be a platform for our students to express their thoughts as well.

    Al, SSE Okamoto
