The April 2009 edition of “Kia Ora from New Zealand“, which is my student’s blog in Japanese, is now up!
This latest edition is quite interesting in that she describes some recent and not altogether positive changes in her professional life in New Zealand.
What was a solid steady job for her has suddenly changed overnight due to… a political decision and now there is much uncertainty for all involved in these large companies. Encourage your students to read it and then ask them if they think there are any differences or similarities between companies in the two different cultures.
She then examines her decision making process from the very beginning when she informed those closest to her in Japan of her dream to work professionally overseas and how events have unfolded thus far.
Several of those closest to her strongly advised her not to give up her senior position here in Japan and pointed out the possible perils which may lie ahead if she did so. She details that advice in this edition but then describes how despite these pressures she was determined to follow though on her dream to realize herself overseas. She had prepared a long time for this opportunity.
In addition to this, currently she has also applied for permanent residency for herself and her daughter who is set to arrive soon to join her in New Zealand and attend school. They are waiting for a decision to be made.
Much uncertainty lies ahead but she is courageous and determined and will press on.
I have always admired her spirit and I think many of us could learn from her example.
Many of my students at Smiths School of English in Fuse are following her regular updates on her life in New Zealand and all agree that she sets a great example in setting, planning and then following through on your dreams.
She will be returning to Japan this weekend for a couple of weeks and I and some students at Smiths School of English in Fuse are looking forward to getting together with her!
Oh! This month’s picture is of her working environment in New Zealand.
Enjoy,

Alex,
Your student is definitely an inspired and inspiring person. She seems to be very confident and living out her dreams to the fullest. Please wish her well on my behalf. Looking forward to the next one! BTW- when do we get to read one in English? That would be nice…
