The January 2009 edition of “Kia Ora from New Zealand”, which is my student’s blog in Japanese, is now up!
In her latest posting she describes her experience of spending her first Christmas and New Year holiday overseas in New Zealand. She compares and contrasts the way people celebrate in New Zealand versus Japan and also expresses her surprise at the venue which was chosen for her company’s Christmas party!
She also describes the unique experience of spending Christmas south of the equator for the first time. It seems that sweating in the summer heat while enjoying Christmas is difficult to get used to.
Further down in her posting she describes the daily challenges of living and working in a foreign country by using the example of simply learning how to use the public transportation system to get around town and understanding the announcements over the speaker.
In closing, she offers some… encouraging words for our students studying English at Smiths School of English.
This is another fun and interesting article in the series “Kia Ora from New Zealand” guaranteed to start some interesting discussions in the classroom.
Please encourage your students to read it and also to write back with questions and comments.
