I love using the Smith’s expanded curriculm and during the last two and a half years have learnt to appreciate how much thought and effort went into developing it.
One of my favourite items and one that students readily participate in with increasing levels of confidence is “Phrasal Verbs” . It is a very detailed topic and one that can be discussed and used over a period of many weeks. It is one that I use with students of all levels, even with pinks, by using the picture cards to assist them with the topic. I have heard some teachers say that they think that their students would think that the picture cards used in the Smith expanded curriculm are a little childish, however I don’t support this train of thought. I have found that the majority of my students like the cards for the same reason that I do, and that is, that it enables them to think about the item being discussed rather than having to think about what to talk about – the pictures provide the topic and support – or what I call the Communicative Confidence Crutch.
The results are great, the students get to communicate in English and my job as a Coach of Communiative Confidence is made much easier, more enjoyable and we get more time for laughter and general chatter. I love catching up with my students each day and I love hearing the improvement that they make as their Communicative Confidence grows.
The Smith Curriculm is not only best for the student but it’s also the best way forward for genuine Coaches of Communiative Confidence.
