If you’re looking for a great place to get some peace and quiet from the usual city atmosphere, try the Osaka Aquarium aka. The Kaiyukan for a peaceful and educational afternoon.
The location is great. English Conversation students at the Smith’s School of English in Kotoen スミス英会話 甲東園 already know where it is, but the English used here for directions may be useful for some. Take any subway or bus you like to get to Hommachi Station in the center of Osaka City. From there take the Chuo Line, that’s the dark green line sometimes posing as a Kintetsu train, westbound for Cosmosquare and get off at Tempozan Station. Not far from there you’ll see a giant Ferris Wheel, and I do mean giant. Walking in that direction will be the logical choice as it will also take you to the Tempozan Shopping Mall and finally to the Kaiyukan.
The aquarium is a world-class facility and, although already twenty years old, still represents a major milestone in engineering. The Ring-Of-Fire theme walks everyone around the entire Pacific Rim and looks at some of the major oceanographic ecosystems encountered along the way. It’s all very cool and relaxing. Stare at the main central tank for hours.
