Here’s an example of one way i like to use the curriculum phrasal cards in my lessons at Smith’s School of English Kyobashi.
Today’s lesson was a red level gentleman who comes as a man to man student.
ITEM – PHRASAL CARDS 436 – 440
I wrote up on the board;
I saw a man my neighbor’s house. At first I thought that he had , but then I realized that he was actually trying to the house. My neighbors were very wealthy as they had been their earnings over the years so that they could and retire to the south of France.
I got the student to read the story and I asked him to try and guess what he thought the gaps were. He managed to get one of them by himself. I then showed him the Japanese cards and asked him to try and guess again. He found this hard so I wrote in the first letters in the story. Again he couldn’t get them but by now he understood the usage in the story. Finally I gave him the English cards and he was easily able to match them up, so I asked him to read the story filling in all of the gaps.
As a wrap up to the phrasal cards I made him ask me questions using the phrases, which he was able to do with very little problem. I also mentioned that I would test him on these next week.

Gideon,
Great lesson idea. I have been using it for months now and have been using the method with other stories and other phrase lessons. Your articles and teaching ideas are fantastic.
