Smith’s School of English Lesson Report by MW 5/8/07
I had 2 beginner level students today. I prepared a basic item and a routine for them. I noticed that I hadn’t met one of the students before.
ET
B19 – From Smith’s School of English One Point Series
I started the lesson with introductions since this was the first time I was meeting a new student. We then proceeded to talk about our golden week holidays. One of the students mentioned that they had eaten fresh lobster over the long holiday. So I introduced last weeks 1 point B19 “Recently I took up ________”
Routine
Basic Routine 1 Questions 1-7 – From Smith’s School of English Routine Series
Then we started talking about our jobs. So I introduced a review of Basic routine 1 starting with the questions what time do you wake/get up? Both students responded well with the Basic routine questions. I corrected a few grammar errors (articles, sentence word order) that are common with this routine. They seemed comfortable with the minor error corrections. I like to establish confidence with my students quickly. So it was nice to see them more confident and talkative by the end of the routine.
Item
Basic Course Numbers1 – From Smith’s School of English Item Series
I noticed that one of the students I had lessons with before struggled a bit with some numbers. So I chose this item with the intent to improve her number reading and understanding capabilities. They struggled a little at first with basic number increments including thousand, million, and billion. At first they read the numbers very slowly with some errors. But as we practiced they comprehended the numbers faster. The students really seemed to be enjoying themselves. This always makes me happy because it is a very effective way to ensure a successful learning process. By the end of the lesson I was very happy to see them reading large billion size numbers quickly and with very few errors.
One Point
B21 – From Smith’s School of English One Point Series
During this past golden week holiday there were a couple of rainy days. So I introduced today’s one point B21 “When it rains I like to ___________” I began with a couple of examples of what I like to do on rainy days. Then I introduced an additional question to prompt the answer to this one point “What do you do on rainy days?” Then I had each of the students ask each other this question with their B21 one point own answer. They each gave 2 answers then by the third answer they seemed very comfortable. Overall I am very happy with the outcome of this lesson. The learning process is the clear winner today and I hope to maintain this level of success as a Smith’s School of English coach.
