I had a class with 1 orange level student recently. She likes shopping in Namba and Shinsaibashi mainly in department stores. She also enjoys window shopping especially in Keihan mall near her office here in Kyobashi. I noticed that she had already completed the shopping 1 routine. So I chose the shopping 2 routine for her in this lesson. Initially I imagined that this advanced intermediate level routine would be too difficult for her. But I knew from previous lessons that she enjoys challenges.
At first when we read the story she struggled a little with some of the vocabulary and grammar points. But this routine’s topic involves shopping returns and exchanges so she caught on quite quickly. She also needed some help with some of the more advanced level questions. But at last she comprehended those quickly as well. We then proceeded smoothly into the question and answer session with little trouble.
By the end she answered all of the questions correctly with very few errors. I noticed a cheerful enthusiastic spirit from her when she achieved this. It seemed like an unobtainable goal had finally been reached. This kind of accomplishment always makes me very happy. Seeing this success is one of the best perks of being a Smith’s School of English coach.
