I had a lesson with a high intermediate student this week. I hadn’t seen her in a long time (6 months in fact). She was a long term student here at Smith’s School of English , Kyobashi so I was happy to see her again. She usually has some good interesting tales about her friends and family so we had lots of catching up to do. I originally had a routine review for her to start this lesson. But after we chatted for awhile I found that the time had quickly slipped past the halfway part of the lesson. She had recently moved to a rural area of Japan so she didn’t have many chances to speak or use her English knowledge for quite some time. So I allowed her enthusiasm to continue with her English communication coming of age again.
Before I knew it the lesson time had passed to the 40 minute mark so it was time for her one point. I don’t really follow this lesson format too often. But if I find the student is really enjoying themselves in these extreme cases I decide it is beneficial for both them and the learning process.
