Today for the One-Point English at Azamino Smith’s School of English we were practicing “I don’t know the first thing about ____.” Every one of our students knows I don’t know the first thing about cooking, so that was an easy one! This of course made it very easy to guess the meaning of the phrase. Investing in the stock market was something else I used for an example, which gave us a chance to study a bit more vocabulary. Moving into sports, I used soccer as an example. Most students in Japan are well-versed in soccer, but us Canadians know little about it.
Would you believe we got a last-minute booking for a trial tonight…by a professional soccer player no less?! All day I had repeated over and over again that I didn’t know the first thing about soccer….and then in walks a professional soccer player!
Thankfully I think he may have been relieved I didn’t know who he was!
Anyhow, I’m looking forward to helping him get some basic English skills so he can hopefully play soccer overseas next year!
We never know what’s going to happen in a day at our school! Indeed that’s a good part of what makes it so fun!
