The world truly is a weird and wonderful place. Thanks to the Internet information travels across the world in the blink of an eye. The other day when I was surfing online I came across a rather interesting article and I thought I should share it with you – A secret teen sound. According to the news report there is a new sound that many adults over 30 cannot hear. Now while I’m 34 I could hear it but I’m curious to know who can and can’t hear it. After the GW vacation I look forward to discussing it in class with my students 🙂
Enjoy.

update – thanks to another Smith teacher for testing it out. Please check his comments and check the link he supplied. I didn’t hear a thing. Amazing!!

Hi Adrian,
Thanks for the interesting post. I found that I too could hear the whistle on that You Tube clip (despite being 35), but read a comment that anyone could hear that particular sound as the beep had been recorded onto video.
For a truer measure, follow the Listen Now link on this page here (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5434687) – I feel properly middle-aged now as I didn’t hear a peep.
I agree that it’ll be a great topic of conversation with students, especially its use as a teenage repellent!

Tim…thanks for that link. Really appreciate it. I’ll tell my students to check both. And I didn’t hear a peep either.

I hear it fine and I am way older than 35. I wonder if a teenager can hear it more intensely?
