Whether you live in Kansai, Kanto or Kyushu you definitely have to make the trip to Kyoto Gosho. I’m always amazed that so many people, even elderly locals, have never made the trip there. On the other hand, there are countless others who make the pilgrimage twice a year without fail, and this year promises to be just as good as last. Kyoto Gosho is unique in that it was the home base of the Japanese Royal Family when Kyoto was the capital, and it is still under the ownership and supervision of the Royal Imperial Household Agency.
Kyoto Gosho opens Wednesday Oct 31 at 9:30 am, closes at 5:00 pm and runs until Sunday Nov 4th. Now this is a holiday long weekend so the crowds will probably be legendary, especially on Saturday and Sunday. Get out early on a weekday to beat those crowds.
My wife Yoko and I have attended the last three openings in a row, last April 2012 and the spring and autumn openings in 2011 as well. We are getting ready for the next one and I’m encouraging all my English Conversation students at the Smith’s School スミス英会話 甲東園 in Kotoen to do the same.
