It’s that time of year again, I dress up for nearly all my classes and give them a heavy dose of Western culture. Each year I try something different and spend the money to make it authentic. Two years ago it was STAR WARS with a real lightsaber, last year it was a soldier with an amazing BB gun to go along with the real outfit. They set me back a bit but the look in my students eyes was worth it. This year I went ahead and bought a fog machine – wow, does my room look good. It’s soooo spooky. So good in fact that I’m already going to order another one for next year. I’ll also invest in two remote timers so that my classroom is intense. I take pics with each student and intend to print up an A4 copy for them to take home or show their friends so that they can say “this is my crazy English teacher”. That’s me. Actually I take everything very seriously. Each year I devote about 10,000 yen to materials for such events and slowly but surely I have some great things to use. In about 10 years I’ll be ready to start offering my services at events all over Osaka – lol. Na, I just do it for my students. English conversation isn’t just about the language, it’s about culture.
It may be tiring, but so rewarding.
