So goes the saying. Work work work and more work, sometimes we need to be reminded to get out of the house, out of the office, get off our butts and have some fun. Enjoy some time with family or friends, take in the great outdoors for all it’s worth, do something spontaneous. Our favourite modern family philosopher, Piero Ferrucci, tells us that if we ignore our child’s wishes for our own, we hurt them and ourselves in our own selfishness. What we actually want is to spend time with them, but somehow we forget this in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. One of the all-time greatest comic strips in the English language is Calvin and Hobbes, written and illustrated by Bill Watterson. This strip always reminds me of the powers of children’s imagination and also the duty of every parent to foster this awesome power- allowing it to grow rather than suppressing it (as so many of us are wont to do). The strip on the right was copied from Watterson’s collection Scientific Progress Goes “BOINK”, and without using any words at all, he shows us what we ought to do- take a little time off and play.
NOTES: English comics are read left to right, then top to bottom. Check out the sadness and shame Calvin’s father is feeling in the 5th panel in the 3rd row. Amazing emotion in such simple black and white drawings!
