I’ve read some interesting articles here recently about the various iPhone applications some people have found useful or entertaining to use and in that same vien, I thought I would introduce one that I have been using for some time and that my students have also found very useful.
Perhaps some of you are already familiar with it.
The application is called “Kotoba.” It’s a multilingual Japanese electronic dictionary available for both iPhone and iPod touch. (iPhone 無料英語辞書)
This application was created using the JMdict files from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group which was started by Jim Breen.
I had been using the online version of Jim Breen’s dictionary for several years and so was very pleasantly surprised when I discovered… that an iPhone application had been created for it. This enabled me to easily carry around a dynamic Japanese-English electronic dictionary with me at all times. It has come in handly numerous times. (iPhone 無料英語辞書)
It’s an absolutely fascinating feature-rich application which rivals any electronic dictionary I’ve ever used. You can search for words in kanji, kana, or romaji. When Japanese words are displayed, the actual manner in which the kanji is written is also demonstrated repeatedly on the side while the screen is active. Furthermore, the base parts of the kanji are explained. In addition, various example sentences are always included. I could go on and on describing all the wonderful features of this iPhone application but perhaps one of the most attractive features to most people will be the fact that it’s absolutely free! Several of the students at my eikaiwa school, Smiths School of English in Fuse, have gone into the local Softbank shop and picked up a new iPhone. (ソフトバンク 布施 東大阪)
Whenever I find out a student at Smiths School of English Fuse has a new Softbank iPhone, I always recommend they download the Kotoba Japanese English electronic dictionary application.
By the way, I picked up my iPhone at the local Softbank Fuse shop during one of those recent ¥0 campaigns that Softbank was running. (ソフトバンク 布施 東大阪)
I don’t have many applications downloaded at all, but Kotoba Japanese English electronic dictionary was the 2nd one, after Skype for iPhone! (iPhone 無料英語辞書)
There’s another great application, but that’s for another article.
